Non-Conference Game 12/13/07
Plt 82 Dubuque 5o Platteville put the beat down on their border rival. Not really sure if there is a rivalry, but I heard from a friend who went to Platteville that Dubuque is the place to be. I also heard from a Dubuque local once that Dubuque cops are notorious for picking up people for public intoxication. Wow, where is this going? Curt Hanson was nearly perfect, 9-11 from the floor, 6-8 from three point land for 31 BARPS. Jeff Skemp was an impressive 8-9 from the floor. Fun stat, Reid Gibbs had 7 points in 4 minutes, just add water for instant offense.

Non-Conference Games 12/12/07 (Sup at Northwestern)
RF 79 Crown 34 Hopefully the Falcons had a little fun blowing a team out for once. River Falls has always played to their competition for as long as I have followed them, so it’s nice to see a lop-sided win for them.
Carleton 69 Lax 67 (OT) Carleton and Lax needed an overtime for the second time in two years, and Carleton once again comes out on top. Mane, Fehrenbach and Brown took 46 of the 62 team shots for Lax. Low scoring game, especially for an OT game. I’m guessing Lax’s guards had to put up lots of end-of-the-shot clock forced shots. Too bad Lax couldn’t find a way to win this one.
Finlandia 99 St 84 Stout’s losing ways continue. Finlandia, the WIAC’s 10th team, was up by 19 at the half and never looked back. I’ve really enjoyed watching Finlandia’s guards play and they had nice games once again. As a team they shot 14-23 from three-point range. That’s hard to beat.
StP 77 Edgewood 59 Point was up by 4 at the half and went on a huge run at the beginning of the second half and led 63-43 with 11:32 left in the game. Khalifa led the way with 18 points before Semling called off the starters and let the bench finish up the game.
Northwestern 86 Sup 73 Superior had their hands full tonight. Northwestern has a good squad and they hit the big shots when they needed to.
I have mixed thoughts on the Jackets. They looked really good at times and pretty sloppy at other times. I guess that sort of streakiness is going to happen with younger players. Dwight Hill was excellent. He was 2 assists shy of a triple double, 20-10-8 for 40 BARPS! Jake Smith looked dominant in the first half. He had 16 of his 21 points in before half time, then Northwestern made some nice adjustments and showed him lots of double teams in the second half. Shane Manor showed why he was a top recruit. He is definitely an athletic young kid with a ton of potential. Put another 15 pounds of muscle on him and give him a year or two of WIAC experience and he will be hard to stop.
No Dan Culy in this one. He was on the bench with a shiny new set of crutches. Not sure what his injury is, but he was in a walking boot. I would have liked to see what he brings to the team and some of their bad stretches of play could have been due to chemistry issues with a main player being out of the rotation.
Buchanan has them playing a very wide-open game where they are pretty much free to take shots whenever they would like. I would have liked to have seen a little more control and more shots within an offense. I did like the intensity that they brought to the floor, however. To say Buchanan is intense is an understatement, but it rubs off on the players and the fans, and creates an environment that might give other teams problems.
Dan Hanson and Mike Anderstrom dominated the paint for Northwestern. Stephen Hanson’s dunk was worth the price of admission! We’ll call it the “$7 dunk.” He took off from outside the lane and absolutely posterized someone from Superior. I didn’t see who it was because I was too bewildered at the ref for waiving it off and calling a player control foul. It was one of the best dunks I’ve ever seen at the D3 level.
Some local 5th and 6th graders squared off during half-time. Those games are always fun because you can look for the one player who is better than everyone else, but will ultimately burn out because his parents are slave drivers or all his classmates will catch up in height in high school. The most entertaining part was the jerseys one of the team’s was wearing. One kid was rocking an old school Kevin Johnson #7 Suns jersey and another had on a Mark Price #5 Dream Team jersey. Mark Price played on the Dream Team? Things you forget. Anyway, my friend and I proceeded to try to remember the jersey numbers for the rest of the Dream Team for the remaining half time break, and I think we got them all.
Final thoughts: Superior will surprise a few teams this year, especially at home. They have a promising young nucleus, and I think you will no longer be able to write Superior off as a win in the WIAC over the next few years.

Non-Conference Game 12/11/07
Michigan Tech 57 Stout 54 The Blue devils drop their first of two in the Upper Peninsula tonight. Low scoring game, which may indicate that Eddie sent a message to his players about shot selection. Stout had a chance to win the game, but Alex Mason's go ahead lay-up attempt, with 3 seconds remaining, was blocked and Michigan Tech prevailed. Stout drops its fifth game in a row. Hopefully they will gain some team confidence against Finlandia (WIAC team 10) tomorrow in Hancock, Michigan. There's no better place to build team moral than the Upper Peninsula.

Non-Conference Games 12/10/07
StP 91 Viterbo 83 The other Rortvedt steps up with 17 points in place of Pete, who is out with a minor knee injury. Nice road win for the Pointers, but I get the feeling that Point isn't clicking on all cylinders yet. The loss of Jon Krull is affecting them more than some people thought it would. They will be at the top all year, but losing that inside presence seems to really have allowed teams to clamp down on their guards.
Sup 101 Finlandia 79 The Jackets fill it up with triple digits against the 10th WIAC team. Superior is leaving no doubt that they have the offensive skills to stick with any team they run up against. A dominant win for them and they were able to get some other players some minutes in the blow out. I might have to check Superior out this Wednesday when they play Northwestern

WIAC Games 12/8/07 (EC at Lax)
I finished strong with a 4-0 day.
WW 92 Sup 85 Whitewater takes care of business against the young Bees. Looks like Superior gave them a good game though and were never really out of the game at any point in time. Savage leads the way with an incredible 37 BARPS in 27 minutes. He just gets it done. Culy 31 and Smith 28 BARPS lead the Jackets and along with Mane and Shea help lead the youth movement of the WIAC.
Plt 67 RF 66 Wow, it must have been a long bus ride home for the Falcons! It sounds like they had control the entire game and then just let it slip through their hands. RF was up 63-57 with a minute to go and they could not hang on. Curt Hanson hit three 3-pointers in the last 1:14 to win the game for the Pioneers. Platteville’s guards are excellent. Shaw lead the way with 32 BARPS in this one. With: Hanson, Lagenfeld, Lohoff, and Shaw it seems like one always steps up when they need to and they are never out of a game because they can go “Hanson” on you and hit three 3’s in less than a minute. River Falls keeps getting better, man, this would have been a great win for them.
Osh 81 St 61 Stout appeared to be up to their same ways in this one and Oshkosh went to work on them with a huge run at the end of the first half and they never looked back. Eddie needs to right the ship or else Stout may not be playing in the conference tourney this year. I could see some turnover with the Stout players before the season is over. Oshkosh looks like they will be at or near the top all year long.
Lax 64 EC 49 I had a fun time making the trip down to Madison Square Garden, I mean, Mitchell Hall yesterday. The lighting is similar to MSG with the court being lit and the stands remaining dark. It really isolates the game, which is neat. There was a nice crowd on hand too, so the game actually ended up being somewhat entertaining despite the low score.
EC breaks its five game winning streak by returning to the form that I remember them having the past few seasons. They didn’t look too good. Part of that is due to Lax’s defense and Coach Koebl’s game plan. Part is also due to EC’s inability to get their offense running smoothly. Most shots were created/forced out of necessity for the Golds due to the shot clock running out. Dan Beyer has developed some excellent post moves, but he seemed a bit overweight and out of shape. Water Street diet? Its claimed the best of some students there. His size helps him seal, but he needs to get in better shape. Geoff Probst has some potential. The rest of the team played their roles with the exception of Shea, who was a bright spot. He was fun to watch. High energy and high intensity. He was always around the action and his line shows that. He reminds me of Andrei Kirilenko and Josh Smith, guys who are extremely active and create havoc with their constant energy. He’s a good guy to build a team around.
La Crosse looked good. Tony Mane is outstanding. He reminds me of Gerry McNamara, both in his actual look and his game. Like Shea, he is not intimidated by being a freshman and his confidence showed. His release rivals Pete Rortvedt for the best in the conference. Both are extremely smooth and lighting quick. I was most impressed by his ability to cut to the hoop. He would lull his defender to sleep and then boom, he was at the hoop for a lay-up. He’s a crowd favorite and he will make a lot of noise in the WIAC. Brandon Brown is the Sam Perkins of the WIAC. Mr. Smooth. Every time I have watched him play he stays stoic and level headed, it’s a nice quality to have especially when playing in tight games. Lax has a nice 4 headed monster in the paint with: Kegler, Wilcox, Fredrick and Haas. They all play hard, get after it on the defensive end and they know how to run the offense. I would have loved to see Mane play with Joe Werner for one year. With an inside and outside combo like that, they could have been a dominating team.
I enjoyed some cheap beer at City Brewery before hand. That place is a college kid’s paradise. Dollar beers and $5 pitchers. Its not the best beer I have ever had, but its certainly not the worst and you can’t beat the World’s Largest 6-pack!
StP 75 Lawrence 56 Point has an easy time with Lawrence and they continue their dominance over the Midwest Conference. Louis Hurd had a nice game off the bench and he probably would be starting for most of the WIAC teams.
Winona 84 Upper Iowa 58 I was happy to see that Winona State played Upper Iowa at 8 PM last night because I was able to swing over and catch that game.
McCown Fieldhouse, WOW, what an incredible atmosphere. Similar atmosphere to a packed game at Quandt, but twice the size. The students line the floor and yell all game. It had the feel of a high school sectional final. The game is definitely, “the place to be” for the student body. You don’t see that in D2 and D3 too much, so that was neat to see.
John Smith is excellent. Never takes a bad shot, never acts selfish and he makes his teammates better because of it. I didn’t feel like he dominated the game, but he drew double teams every possession and opened the floor for his teammates to get open looks, so it was a silent dominance.
Jonte Flowers was in street clothes and didn’t play, so that was a bit disappointing, but his LaFollette boy, Quincy Henderson, picked up the slack in his absence.
I left the game thinking how did St Thomas beat these guys? St Thomas is an excellent team, but Winona was so quick and their defense was excellent. They contested every movement that Upper Iowa made. I was beginning to think that they would stick a hand in and contest you if you tried to tie your shoe. They are a well-coached team and that makes them fun to watch. Hopefully I will get a chance to see them play again this year.
