WIAC Games 12/13/08

Another 2-2 day to run my record to 7-4.

WW 82 Sup 72

My hunch was wrong as Kori Vernon led the Warhawks to victory over Sup. Vernon dropped 22 and 10, including 3 dunks, on the Jackets and once again proved that Sup has no one who can hang with the big guys down low. The stat that stuck out like a sore thumb was the rebounding differential, WW 33 Sup 14.

EC 71 Lax 66

It looks like EC is going to win the “hardest team to predict” award once again this season. I am just going to have to start flipping a coin to decide EC’s games. Lax gave the Golds a great game and it was all tied up at 64 with 1 minute remaining. The Golds hit back-to-back lay-ups to seal the game though. The Tony Mane show was in full force as he took 23 shots. Interestingly, his fellow super-soph Ryan Shea didn’t score a point and only played 12 minutes. Interesting stat from this game, EC went to the line 35 times only making 22 of those freebies.

The ‘Ville 69 RF 62

This was an excellent game. It was a very hard fought game by both teams and it was enjoyable to watch. Like a good punch-counter punch UFC fight, both teams had nice runs going just to see the other team mount a run in return. The first thing that really stuck out to me was the outstanding defense by both teams. Neither team took an uncontested shot for the first 10 minutes of the game. Seeing RF play against the #3 team in the nation made me realize how well they play on the defensive end. This was one of those games that could have gone either way. The difference in the game was Charlie Lohoff as he hit several key shots to stop RF runs and to seal the game for The ‘Ville. RF did an excellent job on Skemp. He was basically neutralized for most of the game.

RF shot 53% from the floor and still lost. That just shows you how good of a team The ‘Ville is. They have so many different weapons. It’s really hard to stop a team who has 6 legitimate scoring threats.

After seeing that terrific game I packed up the vehicle and headed east to see the Titans take on the Blue Devils. Of course, I hit Taco John’s for a cheese quesodilla and some potato oles for my pre-game fueling.

Osh 64 St 62

To my pleasant surprise I got to see another terrific basketball game that came down to the final 0.6 seconds before the outcome was decided. After seeing Stout turn the ball over 23 times on Wednesday, I was expecting more of the same, but Stout played well and controlled the ball only committing 9 TOs.

The Big 3 were the difference for Oshkosh. Stout didn’t have an answer for Miller all game whom put 27 points and 1 assist. Marsh was all over the place racking up rebounds and assists. DSA was the difference in the game though. He was sluggish and tired in the first half and it was pretty apparent that he was not feeling well. Whatever he did at half-time worked because he dropped 16 points on Stout and hit a lay-up, from a beautiful pass from Cory Wittwer, with 0.6 seconds left to win the game.

Stout looked better in this game and they outplayed Osh for a large portion of the game, but they haven’t figured out a way to play the full 40 minutes yet.

Isaiah Farrar and Nathan Staidl led the way for the devils off the bench. Both guys played excellent and really gave the team a spark.

Random notes:

The hockey jersey heckler was in the house and in full force. That dude has some energy.

Enerson-Matthews had a terrific fast break dunk for the Devils.

Luke warm potato oles are infinitely worse than fresh out the frying fat oles.

StP 62 Elmhurst 53

Point represented the WIAC well taking down the seventh ranked Blue Jays from Elmhurst.

Glad to hear you got to see 2 great games. What do you think about The 'Ville's chances against StP now that you've seen both teams?

Ditto on the Ole's. Some of my Ole's from my 6-pack & a pound got cold and no amount of microwave time could revive them to their original greasy awesomeness.

I think The 'Ville chances are very high against Point. The 'Ville is good. Like I mentioned before, they have so many weapons. Hanson had an off day yesterday and Lohoff made up for it with a monster game. I have yet to see Skemp be real aggressive, but he changes the game whether he is aggressive or not.

I was real impressed with Nick Allen. He did a lot of little things that helped the team yesterday. I can see why he starts now.

The 'Ville will be hard to beat and I will pick them over Point, but Point is just as dangerous as ever.

Yeah, microwaves do nothing for old oles. You need those things straight out of the fryer so you can scorch your mouth with every bite.

I'll second that. Nothing beats fresh ole's with nacho cheese.

I think Platteville has a great team...I would have liked to have seen Skemp be aggressive and take over the game against a lesser inside presence. I think RF did a nice job of not backing down, but rarely did they double team him in the post before he got the ball. If he'd make a quicker first move towards the bucket rather than look to pass first he'd put up even better numbers in my opinion. In other games when the defense is always double and triple teaming him I can see why he'd look to pass first. Maybe it's just that it happens so much he has that habit. It'd be nice to see him used more at the high post and take a few shots outside of 3 feet. All of this is just minor though...with the outside and inside game the ville will beat pretty much anyone.
