WIAC Predictions 12/13/08

Current Record: 5-2

Sup over WW: Got a strange feeling that the Jackets might pull this one out. Wiacfan claims not all is well in WW and I would have to agree with him after they lost to Point last Saturday. They have had a long time to think about that game thanks to the quirk in the schedule this season. There is some bad blood between these teams stemming from the last time they played up north and I expect this one to go down to the wire.

Lax over EC: This game may have potential importance for who makes the conference tourney. Mane and Shea will both show up for this one, but whoever plays better down low will come out as the victor. EC definitely has more experience down low, but they haven't shown me anything that makes them better than Lax. I'll take the Eagles.

I get to do the rare, but damn fun, 2-games-in-one-day experience on Saturday. I will be starting at the RF-'Ville game and then heading over to the St-Osh game with a stop at Taco Johns for some Oles in between.

Plt over RF: I'm excited to see The 'Ville play and I am also excited for RF to face their toughest opponent to date. RF gave St. Thomas a great game and that experience will help in this one, but St. Thomas does not have a beast like Skemp inside. It will be a great learning experience for the young Falcons, but I have to keep picking The 'Ville until someone beats them.

Osh over St: I was not impressed by Stout on Wednesday. They have good athletes, but they just don't take care of the ball at all. I wasn't really impressed by Osh either, but I think they are a better team than Stout. I hope the hockey-jersey heckler is out for Stout, he's entertaining.

WIAC Games 12/10/08

3-0 on the night, nice!

The ‘Ville 83 EC 54

I was looking at the pictures from the game and The ‘Ville looked like it packed and rockin’ last night. They finally got their revenge on the Golds. The ‘Ville took a 9 point lead at the half and never looked back. Mike Shaw and Jeff Skemp led the way for the Pioneers. EC had 21 turnovers. You are not going to win many games with 21 turnovers.

StP 82 Lax 69

Jared Jenkins and Evan Sweeney were the unlikely heroes in this game stepping up with 17 points a piece. All in all it looked like a fairly evenly played game with Point finding a way to win like they always do.

RF 62 St 52

Speaking of turnovers, Stout only managed to turn the ball over a few times, actually they turned it over 25 times. I could not believe how poorly they handled the basketball in this game. It was a combination of lack of focus, lack of fundamentals, and RF’s defense. The crazy thing was that Stout controlled most of the game. They had control of the entire first half and if they would have taken care of the ball they may have buried the Falcons early. RF looked sluggish in the first half. The effort was there, but their legs looked tired and shots just weren’t falling for them.

To RF’s credit, they came out in the second half with a new found energy and they managed to take control of the game and never look back. Jake Voeltz is slowly becoming a dominate force down low. I am really excited to see how he plays on Saturday when Mr. Skemp is hanging around the paint. It will be a nice test for him and the Falcons.

Random notes:

Someone needs to help Josh Huettl find his ankles because Jontae Koonkaew broke them into pieces on a move to the hoop. It was a sick move and I’m pretty sure it would have left most defenders looking silly. This whole situation prompted a great sign in the crowd. There is a student at RF games who brings a white board to the games and he proceeded to write, “Got Ankles” after the play. I love it.

Cha Cha Slide was played and the crowd immediately went into a trance and started to get funky.

My prediction for the Sup game was wrong. No dunks from Hanson, but Sup got a nice win against a tough Northwestern team.

Predictions for 12/10/08 Games

The ‘Ville over EC
I would be willing to bet that the crowd will be downright hostile towards the Golds when they show up tomorrow night. My boy, pvegas, claims that the campus was shell-shocked after EC came into Plt and beat the Pioneers on their home floor to end Plt’s season. Well, Plt is no longer Plt, it is now officially The ‘Ville and The ‘Ville is going to take out a whole off-season of aggression on the Golds.

StP over Lax
This is a rivalry that doesn’t get much attention, but when these two teams meet the games are usually hard fought contests that go right down to the final ticks of the clock. Point officially has my attention after they took care of WW, short-handed none the less. I think the Pointers will roll in this one.

RF over St
Another I-94 battle takes place, sort of, you need to take a small little 8 mile detour off 94 to get to RF, but who’s counting anyway. I can’t say enough good things about RF. I have really enjoyed watching them this season and it is neat to see how they improve from game to game this season. Stout’s run and jump could give the Falcons some headaches in this one, but I think RF will prevail.

The only prediction I have for the Northwestern @ Superior game is that Stephen Hanson is going to throw down a monster dunk.

WIAC Games 12/6/08

I'm off to a mediocre 2-2 start, I should have went with my inclination that RF was going to win.

EC 77 St 61

The I-94 battle goes to the Golds. The story of this game was Ryan Shea. Wow, what a terrific game for the sophomore. It appears that Stout had no answer for his non-stop motor and athleticism. Dan Beyer and Survivor Probst both had nice games to compliment Shea. Stout had a fairly balanced scoring attack. Overall, the box score shows that the game may have been a little ugly at times. Neither team shot the ball well, combined 9-38 from three, and both teams had lots of turnovers, which probably didn’t please the near 1500 people on hand to watch this one. A win is a win though and EC is undefeated in WIAC play.

The ‘Ville 76 Sup 69

I will give a formal welcome to “Insider” who posted about this game under my predictions post and Insider’s prediction almost came true, with Sup nearly upsetting the ‘Ville. It was only a 1 point game, with 4 minutes to play when Jeff Skemp decided to do what All Americans should do and scored 5 unanswered points to give a solid lead back to Plt. Sup hung in there though and cut the lead back to 2 with 2 to play. The ‘Ville hung on though and escaped with a victory. Box-score-wise the game was pretty darn equal. Jake Smith and Skemp each had terrific games and by the looks of it, this one could have gone either way.

StP 69 WW 64 (OT)

The game of the day did not disappoint as it took an extra 5 minutes to decide this one. Just when you think Point is down and they are looking at a somewhat mediocre season for their standard, they rise up and take down the number 2 team in the country. If you would have told me that: Louis Hurd and Pete Rortvedt would not play and that Bryan Beamish would miss a chunk of time during the game due to injury, I would have picked Point to win. I would have bet my miniscule life savings on it. Moral of the story, don’t bet against Point. Once again, the box score indicates are fairly equally played game. Wiacfan posted a nice summary as to why he thinks WW is going to have a long year, too much one on one basketball. I tend to agree with him, if you play one on one ball against a fundamentally sound team like Point, you are going to lose. Maybe WW is not as good as I thought.

RF 69 Osh 59

It was great to head to the Karges Center to see a terrific basketball game in which the Falcons basically dominated Oshkosh. Like most things in life, people like to see things as black or white. Is Oshkosh that bad or is RF that improved? Like most things in life, the truth lies somewhere in that grey area between black and white. Yes, Osh is going to have a down year and yes RF is improved and will be a thorn in the side of a lot of WIAC teams.

Seeing Osh play yesterday made me realize how important Jordan Johnson and Greg Schrimpf were for that team last season. Johnson was an energizer bunny of sorts and while he would never grab the headlines, he did the little things that are ultimately priceless to a team. Detlef provided the much needed 3-point weapon that forced defenses to play honest on Marsh and DSA.

With that said, RF had a perfect defensive game plan. They packed two or three guys around DSA down low and forced him to make the pass out to the guards who did not make any threes to keep RF honest. In the meantime, Jontae Koonkaew stayed on Matt Miller like stink on you know what and Miller could not get any offense going. It was neat to watch RF play so hard defensively and that’s what ultimately won them the game.

Jake Voeltz and Jontae Koonkaew were the difference down the stretch. They scored 13 of the 15 final points for RF to seal the victory. They got rewarded by getting interviewed by the FSN guy after the game since this was the FSN game of the week. I was extremely impressed by RF’s poise during this game. They controlled most of the game and when their typical second half lapse came about they weathered it once again and found the composure to win the game. It was an outstanding win for RF who will be looking to go 2-0 in WIAC play with Stout coming to town on Wednesday.

Random Notes:

Osh was 1-13 from three. They need someone other than Miller to step up and start hitting outside shots or else DSA will be seeing two or three defenders every time he touches the ball.

Attendance was only 314, but in Karges those 314 people can get loud. Nice job by the RF students getting out and supporting the team.

TVD got the door from the refs thanks to his profanity-laced tirade that included a gum toss to the floor. That dude is intense, to say the least. Parents should not send their kids to play ball at Osh if their sons don’t like hearing those 4-letter words that are supposedly bad to say.

Marsh is the most athletic player in the conference, but I have yet to see him hit a jump-shot. If he adds that to his game he could be unstoppable. He had a beautiful dunk on a fast break, wow.

Once again I need to give a shout out to the people who control the music played at WIAC games, when you need the crowd to get off their feet play the Cha Cha Slide song. It’s guaranteed to get college kids off their butts. I saw an interesting dynamic yesterday, when the Cha Cha Slide song came on the whole student section jumped up and performed the required moves in synchronization. Meanwhile, the parents section of the gym watched in amazement/confusion and most likely thought, “this is what the kids are doing these days,” It was priceless.

Interesting stat: in the conference games yesterday, the teams combined shot 30 of 120 from three-point land. Is the new line having an effect, it sure appears so!

Lax 61 Augustana 54

Congrats to the eagles who knocked off #3 ranked Augustana last night. Damn, this is a good conference.
